The Hanalei Pier is the place to go for beginner surfers or small children.  The waves are the smallest in The Bay, but in big conditions the currents are treacherous.  Keiki who are brave enough, jump off The Pier as a rite of passage.
   

The Hanalei Pavillion
Moving down the Bay from the Pier to the Pavilion, waves pick up a bit in height.  As a beach park, the Pavilion offers some shelter, benches, picnic tables, lifeguard supervision and for sunsets, the slack key sound of the McMasters.

Public beach access in Hawaii is granted by law.  No beach is  private and all resorts welcome visitors to their oceanfront. Anini's calm waters whip up afternoons when trade winds make it a haven for kiters and windsurfers. Further down the Bay is Pine Trees where world class surfers rip daily in the winter time.  Don't get in the way if you want to make friends, the Pavilion is a better place.
